The Latvian Church of Indianapolis unites Latvian Lutherans with an aim to preach God’s Word in our own language and to cultivate our spiritual traditions in today’s multicultural environment. The Church provides liturgical services every week in the Latvian Language. After each service in the fall, winter and spring, a light lunch is served to promote and continue fellowship.
The Latvian Ev. Lut. Church of Indianapolis is a member of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (LELBA).
The Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Indianapolis has brought together Latvian Lutherans for more than 75 years. The congregations that formed the foundation of today’s church were originally established by Latvian refugees who arrived in the United States after the Second World War. Over the decades, several Latvian Lutheran groups existed in the Indianapolis area, and forty years ago the last two remaining congregations united. Today, one Latvian Lutheran Church serves the entire state of Indiana.
The Latvian Church continues many cherished Latvian annual traditions and events. In the spring, the congregation celebrates Palm Sunday Brunch, the Mother’s/Family Day Brunch and Program, and the June 14 Remembrance Service. In the fall, the church community gathers for the annual Church Picnic, Harvest Day Brunch, and the traditional Latvian Kapu svētki—a memorial gathering held at the cemetery to honor departed loved ones. During the winter season, the congregation marks Latvia’s Independence Day Service, the Advent Concert, the Bake Sale, and the Advent Brunch.
Throughout the year, four Messy Church services are held especially for children and families. The congregation also maintains a kokle ensemble (the kokle being a traditional Latvian string instrument), and various weekly activities are offered for both the women’s and men’s groups.
Today, the Latvian Church is a community of about 100 families—those of Latvian heritage, those with Latvian family ties, and those who simply value a culturally rich Lutheran experience.
